  • Episode – 142: Top email marketing tools

This episode is going to be a continuation of the discussion and we are going to look at some of the most common email marketing mistakes that podcasters make when building an email list and sending emails out to their listeners.

Emails are a powerful tool for podcasters. They help you connect with your audience, promote your episodes, and grow your podcast.

But if not done right, poor email habits can push listeners away and impact your growth.

It will also lead to a burnt out list and all of your efforts will go to waste.

Common Email Marketing Mistakes Made by Podcasters

Emails marketing is all about nurturing your audience, providing them value and ensuring that they are actively engaging with you and your emails.

So most of the email marketing mistakes are around abusing the list that you are building, thereby resulting in a burnt out list that is non-responsive or, dead.

Here are some of the most common such list building mistakes.

Sending Too Many Emails:

Bombarding your audience with too many emails can quickly lead to subscriber fatigue. This in turn results in high unsubscribe rates and low engagement.

So it is essential to know what is the right amount of emails to send.

Balance is key.

Too little emails and your subscribers will lose interest and contact with you.. Too many and they will unsubscribe because of the overwhelm.

Consider your content and audience to determine an email frequency that keeps listeners informed but not overwhelmed.

A twice a week newsletter might be a good start.

Neglecting Personalization:

Generic emails that do not address listeners personally or recognize their preferences can feel impersonal and disengaging.

Personalization goes beyond just inserting a name; it involves tailoring content to meet listeners’ interests and behaviors.

Use segmentation tools to categorize your audience based on their behavior and preferences. You can use the tools available at your autoresponder to automatically do this.

Then send only relevant value based content that resonates with these different segments.

Ignoring Mobile Optimization:

Today everything happens on mobile phones.

The majority of emails now are also being opened and read on mobile devices,

So it is important that you optimize your emails for mobile viewing. Most of the new generation autoresponders give you the option of doing this automatically.

Not focusing on this can lead to poor user experiences and decreased interaction.

So, ensure your email design is responsive and looks good on all devices. Large fonts, easy-to-click buttons, and minimalistic designs often work best.

Not setting the right expectations:

When someone subscribes to your emails, clearly communicate what they can expect to receive.

In fact, this is what a Welcome email does.

And hence, writing a good welcome email is an essential part of building that relationship with your audience.

Set the expectations on what kind of emails they can expect from you, the frequency of emails etc.

Whether it’s episode notifications, behind-the-scenes content, or special offers, setting the right expectations upfront helps build trust and reduces subscriber churn.

Lack of Consistency:

Like they say, “Out of sight, out of mind”.

Consistency is key in email marketing.

If you want your email list to be active and engaged, then you need to send regular emails.

Make sure you’re sending emails on a regular schedule, whether it’s weekly or biweekly, so your audience knows when to expect updates from you.

Regular communication helps build a relationship with your listeners.

It keeps your podcast top-of-mind and builds that the sense of community around your brand.

Lack of Clear Call-to-Action (CTA):

Emails without a clear CTA can leave readers confused about the next steps.

Whether it’s listening to the latest episode, signing up for a webinar, or following your podcast on social media, a clear and compelling CTA is extremely important.

Make your CTAs prominent and straightforward. Each email should have one primary action you want users to take, clearly defined.

Not Monitoring Analytics:

Email marketing statistics and analytic are extremely valuable in understanding your audience and building a responsive and engaged list.

Ignoring data from your email campaigns means missing out on insights that could help you take better and informed decisions.

Data like open rates, click-through rates, and conversions can help you refine your strategies and improve engagement.

So make good use of all the good data that is available to track the performance of your emails.

Adjust your strategy based on what the data tells you about your audience’s preferences and behaviors.

Sending Valueless Emails:

There is a lot of noise in everyone of our inbox these days.

Emails are often ignored or, even deleted without reading.

So, then only way to stand out from the crowd is to offer value.

Always ensure that each email you send offers something valuable.

Whether it’s insightful tips, important updates, or exclusive content, your emails should always add value to your subscribers’ lives.

Now, since one of the main purpose of building an email list is to use them to make money, you might want to occasionally and contextually introduce products, services, or affiliate links that are valuable to your audience.

This can provide them with resources that are beneficial while also supporting your podcast financially.

Keep your content relevant and focused.

Avoid straying too far from topics that interest your audience.

This helps in maintaining their engagement and prevents them from losing interest.

Not Removing Inactive Users:

Email lists are like plants that needs regular nurturing.

And one of the essentials of maintaining a good and healthy plant is to regularly prune them to remove dead branches and leaves.

It is the same with emails as well.

Autoresponders are costly and you are paying them per subscriber that you are maintaining in your account.

So why carry dead weight.

Clean up your email list periodically by removing subscribers who haven’t engaged with your emails for a long time.

This saves you on some money and at the same time also improves the overall health of your mailing list and enhances the effectiveness of your campaigns.

Conclusion: Email Marketing mistakes to avoid

Avoiding these common email marketing mistakes can dramatically improve your podcast’s growth and listener engagement.

By focusing on thoughtful communication, personalization, and data-driven decisions, you can create an email strategy that not only avoids pitfalls but actively enhances your podcast’s appeal.

Remember, email marketing is not just about sending emails; it’s about cultivating an ongoing conversation with your most engaged listeners.
