Podcast Show notes – should you write one for your show and is it is really that important?

That’s what we are discussing in today’s episode.

If you have been into podcasting for even some time, you would know what podcast show notes are.

But for people who don’t know about show notes, in simple terms, show notes are a written summary or an outline of your podcast episode.

They can be anything from a few bullet points to a detailed blog post, depending on how much effort you want to put into them.

Now the million dollar question is – considering you have already put in a lot of effort to create your podcast episode, should you be spending another few hours to create podcast show notes for your episode?

That is what we will be answering in this episode.

Importance of Podcast Show Notes

I have been podcasting since 2010… and in the past 12+ years I haven’t come across any successful podcaster who doesn’t have a website and a show notes for the podcast episode.

You might wonder, why go through the trouble of writing show notes?

But that is where the top podcasters stand out..

They have used their show notes to do a lot of things – build an email list, make money, build a community and what not!

That makes the answer simple.

Show notes adds value to your podcast by making it more accessible and searchable.

They serve as a resource for your listeners and can drive more traffic to your podcast.

Now let us look at these one by one and understand why show notes are important in podcasting.

Redirect them to the website

The intention behind asking listeners to visit your show notes is to get them to visit your website..

Podcasting as a medium lacks the option of making people take immediate action.

Most listeners listen to a podcast while doing their daily chores, walking, exercising or, even driving. They won’t be able to take an action like taking a survey, buying something you are recommending etc. while listening to the podcast.

..and it isn’t always possible for people to remember everything that they heard on the show.

So the only way to make them take action is to redirect them to a place where those links and resources are placed.

And that is what you do by asking them to visit the show notes.

You give them a reason to do that.

And by making the link to the show notes, something that is memorable, you make it easy for them.

Like in my case it is https://thepodcastinguniversity.com/….

Importance from SEO

From an SEO perspective, show notes are incredibly important.

They provide a text-based format of your audio content, making it easier for search engines to index your episodes.

This improves your search engine ranking and makes your podcast more discoverable to new listeners.

Search discovery is one of the biggest sources of finding new listeners for a show and Show notes makes it easier for your to do that.

A place to show off the resources

Show notes are an excellent place to showcase the resources mentioned in your episodes.

We often talk about various resources in the episodes. Your guests might talk about their websites, their products, their social media handles etc.

You might share articles that provide additional information, tips or, even references to what you are discussing on the episode.

Your show notes is where you can have all of these resources made available like the best podcasting microphone you use and recommend, your favorite hosting company etc.

And having these resources readily available adds value for your listeners and makes your content more useful.

It helps build authority

At the end of the days it is all about building an authority for yourself, in whatever niche you are in.

By providing detailed and well-structured show notes, you position yourself as an authority in your niche.

You are able to demonstrate your expertise and show your organizational ability and skills as well.

It shows that you are thorough and committed to providing value to your audience, which can help build trust and credibility.

Reference for your audience

There is a lot of information that we share on our episodes.

And retaining all of this is practically impossible for our listeners.

So how you help them?

It is through show notes.

Show notes serve as a handy reference for your audience.

Your listeners can quickly refer back to specific points or resources mentioned in an episode without having to listen to the entire episode again.

This convenience enhances the listener experience and keeps your audience engaged.

Better engagement

Engagement is key to a successful podcast, and your show notes can significantly boost this.

Your show notes is a place where you can run surveys, questionnaires etc. that encourages your listeners to engage with your show.

You could also include various calls to action, and links to social media, all of which will encourage your listeners to interact with your content beyond just listening.

Monetization Opportunities

Now this is the most important aspect of having the show notes..

If you are anybody who looks at podcast monetization using anything other than sponsorships, then this is how you will be able to do it.

You can include affiliate links to all the products that you are recommending, and links to your own products or services, in the show notes..

This not only adds value to your listeners but also provides a way for you to generate additional income from your podcast.

If you run sponsorships on your show, you might want to include sponsor information as well in the show notes.

Show notes are the best way to monetize your podcast and if you are not using it, you are wasting a lot of time and money.

Conclusion

Remember, show notes are an invaluable tool for enhancing your podcast’s accessibility and reach. They provide additional value to your listeners and can significantly boost your podcast’s discoverability.

Try implementing some of these tips in your own show notes and see the difference it makes! You can reach us via email or comment on our social channels. We’d love to hear what works for you and what challenges you face.
