Podcast editing is a critical piece in podcasting. But a lot of podcasters make these common podcast editing mistakes that ruins all of their efforts.
In this episode I will share 9 such common podcast editing mistakes that you should avoid if you don’t want your show to end up as a disaster.
Podcast Editing Mistakes to Avoid
Editing can feel like a tricky process.
It’s the step that can elevate your content and make sure your audience keeps coming back for more.
But if you can put in some effort to learn it and use some of the fast editing techniques that I follow, then it can be easily simplified.
But then, if you’re making any of these editing mistakes, your listeners might just not stick around.
So, let’s break down the top 9 podcast editing mistakes podcasters commonly make, and I’ll show you how to fix them!
Mistake #1: Ignoring background noise
Let’s kick things off with background noise.
Even a small amount of unwanted noise—whether it’s the hum of your air conditioner, street traffic, or a distant barking dog—can ruin the listener’s experience.
Make sure you’re recording in the quietest environment possible, and use noise reduction tools in your editing software to minimize these distractions.
Mistake #2: Leaving too many filler words
You know those “uh’s” and “um’s” that we all use in conversation?
They’re completely natural, but when you let too many of them slip through in your podcast, it can start to sound unprofessional.
Try to catch yourself during recording and, during editing, trim out the ones that aren’t adding any value to your content.
Mistake #3: Over-editing your episodes
While it might be tempting to edit out every pause and imperfection, over-editing can strip away the natural flow and make your show sound robotic.
Remember, a podcast should feel like a conversation, so don’t be afraid to leave in some of those natural pauses and little imperfections.
It’s what gives your show personality!
Mistake #4: Inconsistent audio levels
There’s nothing more jarring for a listener than having to constantly adjust the volume because one speaker is too loud while another is barely audible.
This is particularly in the case of an interview podcast where both the participants have different microphones and maybe different audio levels.
Don’t ignore audio leveling if you want to give your audience a nice listening experience.
Always make sure to level out your audio tracks during editing, so everyone sounds balanced and consistent throughout the episode.
Mistake #5: Misusing music and sound effects
Music and sound effects can be a great way to enhance your podcast, but they can also be distracting if used incorrectly.
Make sure that your music fits the tone of your show and doesn’t overpower your voice or message.
Use it sparingly to complement your content, not to overshadow it.
Recommended usages are – differentiating segments, intro and outro..
You can add a very subtle background music if you want to.. Some podcasters prefer that to give their audio a slight pop.
Mistake #6: Skipping the proof-listen
You’ve finished editing, and you’re eager to publish, but hold on! Don’t forget to do a proof-listen. This final step can help you catch any lingering mistakes—whether it’s a weird transition, an audio glitch, or even a section that doesn’t flow as well as you thought. Give your episode one last listen before hitting publish.
Mistake #7: Poor editing of intros and outros
Your intro sets the tone, and your outro leaves a lasting impression.
If these sections are rushed or poorly edited, it can start or end your episode on a low note.
Make sure your intros grab attention and your outros provide a smooth, professional finish to the episode.
Mistake #8: Not editing out long pauses and dead air
While natural pauses in conversation are fine, long periods of silence can leave your listeners wondering if something went wrong with the audio.
These awkward gaps can break the flow of your podcast and cause listeners to lose interest.
Make sure to edit out any excessive pauses or dead air during your episodes to keep things moving smoothly and maintain listener engagement.
Mistake #9: Failing to trim off-topic tangents
Sometimes during recording, we get caught up in the conversation and wander off-topic. While a little spontaneity can add charm, too many irrelevant tangents can confuse your listeners and dilute your main message. During editing, be sure to trim any off-topic sections that don’t add value to the episode. Keeping your content focused will make your podcast more engaging and easier to follow.
If I had to pick just one podcast editing mistake that can truly make or break your show, it would be background noise.
Even with fantastic content, listeners will tune out if the audio quality isn’t there.
But that doesn’t need you to invest in expensive equipment. All you need to do is invest time in eliminating unwanted sounds, both during recording and in post-production and put a little more effort into your editing process.
It’ll make a world of difference in how your show is perceived by your audience.
