5 Steps to Automate Podcast Editing in Audacity – Step by Step Video!

While some of the activities need your careful involvement, there are certain other things that can be automated, thanks to the power of automation built into some of these editing tools.

You can use these automations and streamline these repetitive tasks, saving precious time and energy.

Audacity, a popular and free audio editing software, offers several features that allow you to automate podcast editing activities, making your podcast production more efficient and less stressful.

In this post, we will look at the step-by-step process to automate podcast editing in audacity and simplify your workflow, allowing you to focus more on creating great content and less on the technical details.

Step-by-Step Guide to automate Podcast editing in Audacity

The automation process in Audacity uses its inbuild macros.

Macros are small set of instructions that can be recorded and then used whenever needed through a single click.

Audacity lets you create macros for pretty much every activity. You can then bundle together multiple such macros to create a complete workflow.

For e.g.: you can create a workflow to import all of the common files that you use in your episodes. You could also automate all of the audio enhancements that you use while editing.. and many more such activities.

Let me quickly show you how the process works and how to automate audacity.

Here’s a step-by-step process on how to automate podcast editing in Audacity. This is specifically an audio enhancement automation.

But you can follow this same process to automate pretty much anything.

Step -1: Open Your Recording in Audacity

The first thing to do is open your recording in audacity. You can simply import the recording or, drag and drop it into the workspace.

Step – 2: Plan your Workflow

Before you start building your workflow and automating the editing, you need to decide on your workflow.

You will have to decide on what all things go into the workflow and what will be the sequence of events, so that all that you are doing when building your workflow is picking and adding the events.

You can follow a process similar to the below –

1. Import files
2. Background Noise reduction
3. Using Filter Curve EQ to enhance Bass and Treble
4. Loudness Normalization
5. Truncate Silence
6. Use Limiter

Step – 3: Build Your Macro

The next step is to build your macro.

Firstly, go to ‘Tools’ and select ‘Macro manager’.

Create a new Macro and name it something memorable, like “File Imports” or, “Audio Enhancements”.

Give the macro a name that fits the workflow.

Step – 4: Add the editing elements

Now that you have starting building your macro, it is time to add the elements that you want to go into the automation.

This will depend upon the workflow that you planned in step-1.

We are going to be adding 3 things in this macro that we are building –

1. Loudness Normalization
2. Filter Curve EQ – Adding Bass
3. Truncate Silence

Automating Loudness Normalization

Start by inserting a new step.

Select ‘Loudness Normalization’.

Edit the parameters if needed, and add the step.

You can customize the parameters, but in most cases the presets works just fine.

Adding Filter Curve EQ – Bass

Following the same process in the earlier step, insert another step into the macro and select “Filter Curve EQ” from the options.

In this step, I used a preset without really changing anything in the parameters.

Once done, simply click on “Apply” and the process will be inserted.

Automating Truncating Silence

Once again follow the same process as in the earlier step, to insert a new step into the macro and then select ‘Truncate Silence’.

You can edit the parameters and set the threshold (e.g., -20 dB), the duration of silence to detect, and finally how short do you want to make it.

Once done, you can hit “apply” to insert the step.

Step – 4: Save the Macro

Once you have done all of the above steps. don’t forget to save the macros.

Step – 5: Applying Macros

Finally you are ready to apply the macro to your audio.

Select your audio, go to ‘Tools’, then click on “Apply macro” and click on the macro you created, and watch it automate the tasks.
