I did about 27 Podcast discovery calls in the last 10 months or, so. And each was a different experience.
The most common thing that I noticed in these discovery calls was that people came into the call without a real plan. In fact, they did not even know what to ask and what they wanted to understand.
In other words, they did not have a plan.
I wasn’t really expecting drastic action takers to come onto the call, thanks to my experience of being into internet marketing.
There were about 5 people who started off with their podcasting journey but none of them continued beyond about 5-6 episodes.
Again, I wasn’t really expecting dramatic results. After all, only 1% of the population succeed in life and about 8% achieve their goals in life.
In podcasting too, the numbers are pretty much the same.
Just browse through that favorite podcasting app of yours and you will find that most Indian podcasts have stopped releasing episodes long back.
They started off somewhere during the pandemic and then fizzled out.
Not that, stopping to produce episodes is something you should never do. If you are a thorough business person and you feel that the podcast isn’t really fitting into your business plans and isn’t helping your business, you might as well discard it.
That’s a different story.
But these podcasters you see on these podcasting apps were impulsive decision-makers who jumped onto the podcasting bandwagon, just because the entire world was doing it.
They didn’t really have any plans for their podcasts.
So, why do podcasts fizzle out?

One of the most common questions I get asked in the podcast discovery calls, is “When will I start making money with my podcast?”
And when people start off with their podcasting journey with this mindset, where do you think they will end up.
This is one of the common reasons for shows fizzling out.
Overnight success is a fairytale. Every success story has a lot of sweat and toil in it. Just that when you look at a successful person, from the outside you are probably not able to see the scars of these toil.
Podcasting is a serious business.
It cannot be a hobby which you take to as and when you have time.
It requires a plan, time commitment and continuous learning.
And it is here that most people falter.
People simply start off.
They think that they will do things as they progress. But what they do not realize is that, these things that they are pushing off to later is what will make them progress.
I have spoken to a lot of people who ask me what they need to do first. I tell them that they need to put together a plan on what they want to do, how they are planning to do it and everything else related to starting off.
And the first response is, “Yeah. That is something we will do but what other than this is required to start off?”
You cannot set aside a discussion on some of the core things. These are essential points of discussions and they need to be given their due time. If you are not doing that, then you are doing a huge mistake..
