Do you know how to transcribe a podcast? If you are still wondering if the transcription is really required and important, then listen on as I answer a viewer question that I received a few weeks back.
If you have been following me, you would have noticed that I started adding a transcript file to my show notes very recently.
Why did I start doing that only recently?
I will talk about that in a little while but first the question that I received.
Is transcription important and what is the real purpose of adding a transcript to a podcast when the very essence of it is to make content available in the form of audio? Also what is the easiest way to transcribe a podcast?
I have been listening to podcasts for more than a decade now. And I have listened to a lot of different shows, from a wide variety of genres.
The one thing that I noticed was that most good podcasts that really engaged with their audience and were giving real value to their audience had a transcript on their webpage.
Is that just a coincidence?
I would believe not.
If your objective with your show is to provide value to your audience then you will want to do that in multiple different ways so that you cater to every one of those people out there who could benefit from your content.
Isn’t it?
And that is precisely what these podcasts were doing.
One of the podcasts that I follow is “The Hustle and Flowchart Podcast“. This is a show with a lot of information stuffed into it and most of the episodes are pretty long like more than 60 minutes.
The one thing that I like about this show is their transcript.
The guys who run this show make this transcript available in the form of a “companion cheat sheet” that they use as a lead magnet.
That’s an amazing marketing strategy. For somebody like me who likes listening to the show but might not always have the time to to listen to the entire episode, I will prefer downloading that cheat sheet, so that I can go back to it and refer to it when I am looking for some information.
I felt that this is something that we could easily do with podcast transcripts as well.
Long story short, I realized it long back that putting a transcript of your podcast on a website where you host your show notes, has a lot of advantages.
But then, why did it take me so long to implement that in the case of The Podcasting University?
How to Transcribe a Podcast and Why You need to do it?
To answer the question, “should you transcribe a podcast”, I would say, “YES, you should”.
And you would have seen some of the real reason behind why I say that.
But there is more to it than merely the marketing strategy that is involved.
Here are a few reasons why I feel that a transcript is an essential part of your podcast and why you too should look at it –
- It really helps in making your content more accessible to listeners, especially the ones who are hard of hearing.
- A transcript helps boost the SEO of your website, so search engines like Google can find your content.
- It can help improve listener engagement
- Transcripts can also help in bettering your social media shares.
At this point it is important that you understand that transcriptions and transcribing is currently only available for english podcasts.
Which essentially also means that there could be a huge market out there of people looking to transcribe their shows that are in vernacular languages.
..and this could really be a big business opportunity as well.
