tips to make a solo show interesting

How to make a SOLO show, interesting and engaging?

We will continue with our women podcaster series from the next episode onwards.

But for this episode, let us talk about running a SOLO show and how to create one that engages your audience.

In the last 25 odd episodes, we have discussed a lot of things about podcasting.

I happened to get a few emails from some of the listeners who said that it would be great if they could get byte sized information in between which are actionable and implementable tips.

So, here’s the first of these where I will share 5 tips to make a solo show interesting and engaging for your audience. I hope you find benefit from these.

How to make a SOLO show Interesting and Engaging for Your Audience?

SOLO shows can be very boring and you might feel like you are talking to walls. It is not uncommon for this feeling to slowly creep into your show as well.

Also, when you are recording your show in the corner of your bedroom, in your pyjamas it is easy to get low on energy. With no one around, it can feel very awkward.

And the result – your show lacks the kind of energy that can pump your listeners up, which in turn leads to low engagement from your audience.

So here are 5 tips to create a show that is engaging. And these are somethings that I have practised, so I know it works and it will work for you.

Stand, don’t sit – Sitting down in a chair can at times lead to a relaxed approach. The sunk feeling can easily reflect in your episode. This is one of the reasons why you see performers recording their show while standing. It gives that extra energy to perform and also gives you room to enact with gestures, which is something I will discuss a little while later. So record your episode while standing.

Keep a mirror in front of you and record your show – Record as if you are talking to your reflection. This will make you more interactive and will make you feel a little more energetic while recording your show.

Ask your spouse or, friend to sit in front of you when you are recording – This is if they are okay to tolerate you. That’s on a lighter note. But this can be an extremely good method of bringing in that conversational energy into your show.

Don’t write down your script completely – Create an outline and let your thoughts flow around those outlines. When you talk naturally, there will be a natural intonation in the conversation. This makes your show look like you are actually talking to someone and can make it even more interesting.

Use actions and gestures when you are recording – Use action and gestures as if you are talking to someone. I practice this a lot. Because actions and gestures bring out a lot of extra energy from inside of me. I can guarantee you that you will see the difference if you do this. This might need a little bit of push from within. And this works great if you are standing and recording.

So those are the 5 tips.

You can make your show extremely engaging, if you focus on creating your show for a single person. Forget that it is targeted towards a large audience.

Focus on a single person. Use words that address a single person like, “YOU”, “YOUR” etc. and record as you act it out.

Keep in mind that your podcast is a “BROADCAST”. And you are broadcasting a show. Act like you are the center of attraction conducting the show and you will see a lot more energy being pumped into your conversations.
