And irrespective of if you’re just starting out or you’ve been podcasting for years, there is some information on how to make money podcasting for every one of you.

But before we get started, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Podcast monetization isn’t something that you plan for after you are about 50 episodes into your show. You need to start planning for it from the moment you start planning for your podcast.

It should essentially be part of your overall podcasting strategy and you need to detail it down to the last bit when you are creating your podcasting strategy.

What if you have already started with a strategy?

It is never too late to do something as basic as putting together a strategy. Even if you are 50 episodes into your show, go ahead and spend a few hours putting together a strategy for your show and include the monetization aspects as well in it.

And the first step to monetizing your podcast is to determine your goals.

What do you want to achieve with your podcast?

Do you want to make a full-time income from it?

Do you want to use it as a way to promote your business?

Once you know your goals and you have answers to these questions, you can start planning your podcast monetization strategy.

So, without further ado, here are the most popular podcast monetization methods:

Let’s get started then.

Podcast Monetization Methods – The Conventional Methods

In all of the podcast monetization-related discussions, I always keep saying that there is a need to change our perspective on how we look at it.

Conventionally, the idea has always been to “make money from your podcast”. This perspective limits your options only to the most popular podcast monetization methods which are sponsorships and advertising.

A small change to this perspective and looking at it as “making money with your podcast” can bring about a huge change in the options that are available for your podcast.

There is this one important thing that you need to keep in mind when we talk about podcast monetization. Podcasting isn’t a product that can make you money unless you are so popular or, your show is that popular. Instead, podcasting is a channel or, a medium to make money.

So here are the most popular podcast monetization methods:

  • Advertising
  • Sponsorships
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Crowdfunding
  • Merchandise sales

Now Let’s take a closer look at each of these methods.

Sponsorships:

One of the most popular podcast monetization methods is sponsorships. With this method, you partner with companies or brands that are willing to pay you to promote their products or services on your podcast.

You can find sponsors for your podcast by reaching out to businesses that you think would be a good fit. You can do this by approaching them on their social media channels or, through emails from their websites.

Another option is to use a podcast sponsorship platform like Midroll. Some of the podcast hosts also help with this.

But irrespective of which method you follow, keep in mind the fact that your communication with the brands should be about showing them the benefit of sponsoring your show.

Create a media kit with details like your reach, both through your podcast and your social media presence. Throw some statistics like total downloads, downloads per episode, etc. to let them know your show’s popularity.

Advertising:

Advertising is another common way to make money podcasting. It involves selling advertising spaces on your show.

Usually, there are 3 types of ad spaces that most podcasts sell. These are pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll.

Restricting your ads to these 3 spaces helps ensure that you are not ruining your listener experience by abruptly interrupting them while listening to the episodes.

To sell ads, you can contact companies directly or use a podcast advertising platform.

You can also reach out to your host to check if they offer ads on podcasts. Most premium podcasts offer you the option of dynamically inserting ads on your podcast.

While what you are being paid might be lesser than what you will get if you approach the companies directly, it is still worth it because you save on all of the time you will otherwise be spending in approaching and finalizing these deals.

Affiliate marketing:

Affiliate marketing is another popular podcast monetization method.

It is my favorite method for monetizing not just podcasts but also blogs and videos and this is the method I recommend the most.

Affiliate marketing works well if you have a large audience and you are able to redirect them to a place like a website where you are promoting these products and services.

It is hence that I recommend having a website for your podcast. It not only makes monetization easier but also helps in building your email list which you can then use for marketing.

In affiliate marketing, you promote products or services on your podcast and earn a commission for each sale that you generate.

Affiliate marketing requires your listeners to use a unique link that is specific to you to buy the products/services, in order for you to earn a commission.

One of the challenges with recommending products on podcasts is that listeners don’t quite remember these links and you might end up losing the commission.

A website helps resolve this problem. All you need to do is redirect your listeners to your website and ask them to check the resources in the show notes.

To find affiliate programs, you can contact companies directly or use an affiliate network like ShareASale, Clickbank or, join the Amazon associates program.

Crowdfunding:

Crowdfunding is another popular podcast monetization method and a lot of podcasters use this.

With this method, you solicit donations from your listeners in order to support the production of your podcast.

Crowdfunding is a great option if you have a dedicated fanbase. You can set up a Patreon account or run a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

You can also use something like a Buy me a Coffee or, even use Paypal donations to solicit donations and contributions.

Merchandise sales:

Another popular podcast monetization method is merchandise sales. With this method, you sell products like t-shirts, mugs, and stickers that feature your podcast logo or name.

You can also design merchandise with themes and quotes specifically targeting your industry users and sell them online using a simple eCommerce setup. You can check out a similar merchandize store for my podcast here.

Other Podcast Monetization Methods

In addition to the conventional podcast monetization methods that we discussed above, there are some unconventional methods as well that I have seen a lot of podcasters using to monetize their podcasts.

Here are some of them –

Digital Courses

Podcasting helps you build your brand and authority. As a podcaster you can leverage this authority to create and sell digital courses in different niches.

The inspirational niche is one such niche where there are a lot of podcasters who are making money with digital courses.

Speaking Opportunities

You could also build your client base and book speaking gigs on related topics. This is particularly possible if you use your podcast to build a brand for yourself.

Using a simple booking tool, you can book speaking gigs and make money with it.

Books/Reference Materials

This is something I saw very recently with one of the podcasters and she was doing really well with this monetization model.

You can pick important quotes from your interviews with your guests and create a book out of it. Title it something like “50 Experts Speak on xxxx(the topic)” and sell it on Amazon and on your website.

You could also package it as a reference material for your podcast listeners and sell it to them.

Both of these work really well if you are in a very informative niche.

Subscription Podcasts

This is another good way of monetizing your show. You can create a premium version of your show for a subscription and offer the same show but without ads, more personalized content and insider or, early access to the content etc.

Some of the premium hosts offer this option. Acast has a very simple process to launch a subscription model for a show, which you can try. This option is also available with their FREE plans.

So there you have it! These are the most popular podcast monetization methods. As you can see, there are a variety of ways that you can make money podcasting.

How to pick the right Podcast Monetization Method

Now it’s time to choose the method that is right for you.

Consider your goals and your audience when making your decision. And don’t be afraid to experiment with multiple methods until you find the one that works best for you!

Choosing the right podcast monetization method for you will depend on a few factors.

Audience Size

First, consider your audience size. If you have a large audience, you’ll likely have more success with advertising or sponsorshipd.

If you have a smaller audience, sponsorships and merchandise sales may be a better option for you.

Affiliate marketing works with all kind of audiences, so this is something you can definitely use with your podcast.

In fact, I recommend combining multiple monetization methods along with affiliate marketing.

Podcast content

Second, consider your podcast content. If your podcast is focused on a specific niche, you may have more success with sponsorships.

If your podcast is more general in nature, advertising may be a better option.

Once again, while affiliate marketing works with all niches, there is a possibility that there aren’t a lot of products/services in your specific niche.

In such a scenario, pick something that is closely related to your niche and promote that. Another good option is to go with Amazon affiliate program, because with it, it is unlikely that you wouldn’t find a product or, a service that you can sell.

Your Podcasting Goals

Finally, consider your goals for monetizing your podcast. If you’re looking to make a lot of money, advertising and affiliate marketing are likely your best bet.

If you’re looking to monetize your podcast without compromising its quality or integrity, sponsorships, affiliate marketing and merchandise sales may be a better option.

3 Tips to Succeeding with Monetization

Making money with your podcast can be really frustrating and it can take a lot of time as well. But the key is to not get frustrated and stay consistent.

No matter which podcast monetization method you choose, there are a few things that you can do to increase your chances of success.

  • First, make sure that you have a high-quality podcast. This means having great audio quality and interesting, engaging content.
  • Second, promote your podcast on social media and other platforms. The more people who know about your podcast, the more likely you are to find success.
  • Finally, be patient. It takes time to build an audience and to start making money podcasting.

Don’t give up if you don’t see results immediately – keep promoting your podcast and delivering great content, and you’ll eventually find success!

Podcasting can be a great way to make money, but it’s important to choose the right monetization method for you after considering all of the things that we just spoke about.
