A podcast Artwork is one of the first things you should focus on when starting your podcast.

In fact, it serves as the visual identity and face of your podcast and hence needs almost the same kind of attention as that of the podcast name.

For anybody searching for podcasts in a podcast directory, your podcast artwork is the first thing that they see even before they read the title of the show.

It’s often the first impression people have of your show, so it needs to be attention-grabbing and memorable.

Hence, it is important that you are brainstorming, thinking and carefully designing your Podcast artwork.

Don’t do a shoddy job with it.

Keep in mind that a good artwork can help you stand out in crowded podcast directories and capture potential listeners’ interest.

It should be eye-catching and representative of your show’s theme/topic

Best Practices for Creating a Stunning Podcast Artwork

For somebody starting off, designing a good artwork can be a challenge, especially since none of us are great designers.

But then let me break it to you.

With all of the advancements in technology, you don’t really need to have designing skills.

You just need a good template and a good designing platform.

And with AI doing most of the things today, designing has become even more simpler.

In order to help you with designing your podcast artwork, we will look at some of the critical things you need to keep in mind and how to go about designing it and testing it.

Elements of a Good Podcast Artwork

Here are a few elements of a good Podcast Artwork. Keep these design guidelines in mind to make your podcast cover art stand out.

Simple and clean design

Keep your design simple and avoid clutter or busy backgrounds. If you observe some of the best podcast cover arts, you will see that they use background colors that are easy on your eyes and look aesthetically pleasing.

Research some of the best podcast artworks out there to derive inspiration for your cover art.

Use relevant imagery

It is important that you don’t use overused images or, graphics. Instead use something that relates to your podcast’s theme.

The image should either reflect your brand or, the theme of your show. Also ensure that you are using high quality images in your artwork.

Legible text for the podcast title

The two things that I would say, has to absolutely be there on your artwork is – first, the name of your show and second, a relevant image.

Your podcast title should be prominent and clear. So use clear, easy-to-read fonts that catches your audiences attention even in a crowded podcast directory.

Consistency

Ensure your podcast artwork is consistent with your overall branding. The colors, fonts, logos, etc. should be in line with your branding.

In fact, if one of your listener happens to visit your website after seeing your Artwork, he/she should see and experience a consistency.

Dimensions and Format

The Ideal dimensions of an artwork is 3000×3000 pixels for iTunes/Apple Podcasts. That is what is accepted on almost all directories.

But I would recommend creating your images in at least 4800px x 4800px or, 6000×6000 pixels. This is so that the quality of the image doesn’t suffer on any platform.

But you might want to keep an eye out on the file size of the image as well.

The file formats can be JPG or PNG. PNG files are usually bigger RGB color mode

DIY vs. Hiring a Professional Designer

Now that we know the basic elements of a good Podcast artwork, the question is should we do it ourselves or, hire a designer.

While hiring a professional designer is an expensive affair, the DIY approach is cost effective and can save you some dollars.

If you have the money to do it, then go ahead and hire a designer. Else go with the DIY approach.

Now there are some pros and cons for both.

DIY approach

Pros: Complete control, ability to make changes easily, lower cost

Cons: Time-consuming, since you are not a professional designer, your images could look amateur

Having said that it is also important to note that there are a lot of easy to use tools out there like Canva, Adobe Spark, etc. which have a lot of ready made templates that are easily customizable. Some of these tools also have AI support so that is again an added advantage.

If you know how to use midjourney or, co-pilot, then you can use that as well.

Hiring a professional designer

This can be slightly expensive but guarantees a professional artwork and high-quality results

Pros: Expertise, experience, professional-looking artwork

Cons: Higher cost, less control over the process

If you are planning on working with designers, you might want to ensure that you have checked their portfolios for their earlier works.

Also be as clear as possible in communicating your vision.

You might also want to check on how the revision process works.

Testing and Optimizing Your Artwork

Once you have your artwork ready, there a few things you need to do to ensure that everything is right.

1. You might want to test your artwork on different devices like desktop, mobile, and tablets
2. You might also want to get a first hand feedback from your friends and family members. This will give you an idea of how people perceive your artwork.
3. When you are creating your artwork, you might also want to create variation of the artwork, like a YouTube cover, Instagram image templates etc. This will help ensure that you have a consistent branding everywhere and will help you with for marketing purposes.
4. You can also create a few variations of your artwork and pick the one on which you get the most positive feedback. This will help avoid rework and save time.

Those were some of the things that you might want to keep in mind in order to make your podcast cover art stand out.

If you are new and just getting started, I would recommend going for a DIY option. But if you have the funds to hire a designer, you can do that and get a professional artwork done.

But irrespective of what method you adopt, these tips will surely help you with creating a high converting podcast cover art.
