Continuing with the conversation from the last episode, where we spoke about lead magnets, in this episode I will let you in on some very important tools that you will need to manage your email marketing.

And a secret – these tools are unlike the conventional tools you hear about and will save you from making a hole in your pocket!

So let’s get straight into it.

Email Marketing Tools that Every Podcaster should use

Before I get into each of these tools, I will divide them into 3 different categories for better understanding –

  1. Optin form builders
  2. Autoresponders
  3. Lead Magnet Creators

Let us look at each of these in detail now.

Optin form builders

This is an absolutely essential tool in email marketing, in fact list building.. and this is where it all starts.

In order to capture emails from your listeners, you will need –

  1. a simple optin form
  2. or, a landing page

It is here that you make people enter their email address and name or, any other details that you want to capture..

It is a simple form, but it needs to have the capability of capturing these details and sending it to the software the we use to send emails. This software is called an Autoresponder.

A page on your website that you send a listener to, is generally called a landing page.

While an optin form only has a few text and two text boxes to capture the details, the landing page is a long page that talks about the benefits, features, why somebody should download your freebie etc.

But both these serve the same purpose in our case.

Now in order to build these, you will need a special kind of plugin. Since I promote using WordPress to build your website, I will talk about wordpress plugins.

The two tools that I recommend to build optin forms are –

  1. Thrive Leads
  2. Optin form Monster.

These are the best plugins to do this.

If you are planning on building a landing page, you will need a slightly more advanced plugin that can help you design your page.

And for that I recommend my go-to resource:

  1. Thrive Suite

It might need you to shell out about $290 per year. But every single penny of that amount will be worth it, if you use it the right way.

Why?

Because Thrive suite can help you build you website, run a membership site, automate tasks, gather testimonials and much more..

Autoresponders

Now onto the second category of tools for email marketing.

The autoresponder is where the entire action happens.

Autoresponders help you –

  1. Capture and store your email addresses.
  2. Send emails to your audience and engage with them

When picking an autoresponder, you might want to keep a few things in mind like:

  1. Deliverability – You want all or, most of your emails to land in your reader’s inbox and that needs delivery reputation which not all autoresponders have
  2. Features to Price – Every autoresponder comes with a cost. So you might want to pick the best autoresponder that gives you the best features for the price that they charge.
  3. Automation and Segmentation – Segmenting your audience based on their interests is an essential part of email marketing. Similarly you need to have the capability to create automated sequences so that a series of emails go out automatically.

If you look at all these 3 things, I recommend the below 2 services who I have been using for a long time now:

  1. Aweber
  2. Convertkit

These are 2 of the top autoresponders in the market and has everything that you will need to manage your email marketing efforts.

But the thing to keep in mind is that they are slightly on the costlier side. In fact, Convertkit is costlier than Aweber.

If you are planning to go with Convertkit then you need to know that:

  1. There is some learning curve to understand their automations, sequences etc., which is a little complicated for beginners
  2. The cost with Convertkit increases as your list grows

But if you are going with Aweber, then keep in mind that:

  1. They have a list based system which means that you might be paying twice for the same listeners being on two different lists that you might have created to segment your audience
  2. They don’t have as advanced an automation like that of Convertkit

If you are somebody who believes that Quality necessarily need not come with a higher price tag, then you are going to love what I am going to share.

There is two of these services that I have started using very recently and I am absolutely loving them.

Why?

Because:

  1. They are extremely cost-effective. One if a very low monthly cost and the other one is a one time payment
  2. They are far simpler to use and gives you most of the features that you will need to run your email marketing
  3. Their deliverability is exceptional because they have a lot of restrictions of email marketers who abuse the system by sending bulk emails with no value.

These two services are:

  1. Birdsend – This is my new found love because it is very similar to Convertkit but costs about 1/4 of what Convertkit costs. It has all of the features that Convertkit gives you and at the same time is pretty easy to use in comparison to Convertkit
  2. Sendfox – This is another of my favorite. This comes with a one time payment, has all the essential features though isn’t as robust as Convertkit. But has excellent deliverability and is easy to use

If you are somebody who isn’t hung up on brand names like Convertkit and Aweber, then I would recommend going with Birdsend.

But if you don’t want to pay a monthly charge then absolutely go with Sendfox. They are amazing.

You will find the links to all of these in the show notes.

Lead Magnet Creators

Now, finally coming onto lead magnet creators.

We had discussed about lead magnets in our previous episode.

Some of them involves creating the lead magnets like with templates, handouts, checklists etc.

How do you create these?

While there are no tools required to do it, because every a plain pdf document works, some of you might be obsessed with quality, looks etc.

If you are one of those, here are 3 tools that I recommend:

  1. Word – The first one is our good old Microsoft Word or, Google Docs. They come with a lot of ready made templates that you can use. But it will involve spending some time to perfect the designs
  2. Designrr – This is a tool that I have used for quite long and there are a lot of the lead magnets that I have created using it. It is a simple tool that uses any ready made document, blog post or, any article on the tool and creates lead magnets in a few clicks.
  3. Canva – Canva is an amazing designing tool. You can easily use any of the ready made designs on Canva and design your lead magnet. Doing it can take some time but doesn’t require much of learning or, additional skills.

But, I would recommend not spending a lot of time in designing your lead magnets.

Keep it as simple as possible.

Use the time that you are saving on generating more content.

Conclusion – Email Marketing Tools

So those were some of the most essential tools for email marketing and list building.

Remember that these are essential tools – meaning, you need these to run your email marketing efficiently. Tools like the optin form builders and autoresponders are non-compromisable.

So, invest in those and consider them as long term investments which will give you amazing ROI in the long term.

If you are worried about the expenditure, then allocate your expenses accordingly and spend only on the most important and essential tools and resources.
