Should your podcast be an audio podcast or, video podcast?

In this episode I am trying to answer this question that I am frequently asked by a lot of people on the podcast discovery calls.

Videos have been making headlines for quite some time now. And the virality associated with videos in unquestionable.

This is probably what makes videos attractive and leads people to get on YouTube with the sole goal of becoming the next YouTube sensation.

While videos see a lot of engagement, at the end of the day, it is a video. And you need to be glued onto the screen to consume that content, unlike podcasts.

But with YouTube entering the podcasting game and with the news of the shutdown of Google Podcasts, is video a good thing?

Let us do a quick critical evaluation of Videos and how it compares to audio to see what is better – audio podcast or video podcast.

What is better – Audio Podcast or Video Podcast

Podcasting has its own benefits and a lot of time when we talk about the benefits of podcasting, the first thing that comes to our mind is the accessibility.

Podcasts cuts down on the barriers of accessibility. You don’t need to be in front of your computer or, your mobile phone in order to listen to a podcast.

You can be driving, working out in a gym, in the middle of traffic etc. All of these are opportunities to listen to a podcast.

Why?

Because all you need to do it put on your earphones and that’s it.

Compare that to a video where you need to be focussed on it and glued onto the screen in order to watch the show and you will know what makes podcasts unique.

So coming back to the original question – should your podcast be an audio podcast or video podcast?

Part of it is answered by the above accessibility argument.

If you are to start a video podcast, then keep in mind that the first argument against it is the fact that it is less convenient for your audience to tune in to your show. Video seriously limits their access to your show.

While we are on that point, another important aspect to look at is the availability of video podcasting options, with various podcasting platforms. Not all podcasting platforms give you that option. So you are limited to maybe a spotify or, an apple podcast.

Or, else the only other option you would have is Youtube. And Youtube isn’t really a place for a podcaster.

So, the very fact that people go to a podcast app to be able to tune in and listen to something, makes podcasting all about only audio and not video.

Imagine you logging into Youtube to see 2 people sitting across a table and talking for about 30 minutes. Is that why you really logged into Youtube?

No, right!

Youtube is all about visuals. You love watching stories playing out in front of you in a video, or a whiteboard tutorial where you visually see things that the tutor is explaining or, even a screen share where somebody explains how something works or, how something is to be done.

A podcast where a host is interviewing a guest or, two hosts chatting with each other etc. isn’t much of an attraction on Youtube.

While you might argue that Joe Rogan ran a successful podcast on Youtube all these years, the fact of the matter is that you have to be a big brand like that of Joe Rogan to pull off something like that.

Video podcasting has its own share of problems and is difficult to create.

Since it is a video, you don’t want to look ugly on the show. You have to get ready for the show and so does your guests. In comparison to that, in an audio podcast you could be in your pyjamas while you are interviewing your guest.

Which is how I did my last 4-5 interviews.

Often times, guests aren’t comfortable with video and could intimidate them. And you don’t really want to create an uncomfortable atmosphere for your guest.

If you ask me, I would always advise to go with an audio podcast, if you are really planning to start a podcast. If you are really keen on doing a video, then I would suggest Youtube.

Having said that, there are a lot of podcasters who have taken the video route. If that is something you are planning to do, then be ready to slog it out because there is a lot of work ahead of you if you are planning to do videos.

At this point, there is something that I have seen a lot of podcasters doing recently. They record videos and use snippets from these videos for their promotions. This is a good idea when it comes to promoting your show and these snippets can really help gather attention and interest especially on platforms like Instagram and Youtube.

But then, I would recommend keeping it only upto that -a snippet or, a teaser video.

So what do you think – should it be an audio podcast or, a video podcast?
