Continuing on with the discussion, in this episode we will talk about some basic but very important email marketing tips for podcasters..

These tips can make a huge difference not only in your ROI but also in ensuring that your email list stays engaged and active.

So without wasting any time, let us get straight into these

Basic Email Marketing Tips for Podcasters

Email marketing is all about building an engaged subscriber who not only likes reading your emails but is also ready to take action on your CTAs.

But for that to happen, you subscriber needs to feel that your email was written for him.

They should be willing to your read your email.

Your email needs to be looked at as a must read and priority by every one of your subscriber and not just as another email in the inbox, that most likely will get deleted without reading.

These tips that I am going to share will help you get that done.

It will ensure that you have a clean, active and engaged email list.

These are tips that beginner email marketing marketers often miss out on.

So let us get started.

Use double-optins:

Double-optins are an option that every email autoresponder provides. It is a way of confirming that the email address that was used to signup is indeed owned by the rightful owner and he is the one who is actually interested in receiving the emails.

Using double optins means that your subscriber has to take an additional action of confirming their email address.

This could mean lesser signup because there will be some people who might not confirm their email address and hence cannot be sent email.

But it also means quality subscribers who are genuinely interested in receiving the emails.

So I would always recommend turning on “double-optins” though your autoresponder might give you an option of turning it off.

Personalize your confirmation email

When you turn on double optin, there is a confirmation email that is sent by your autoresponder company.

It is a very generic email with a confirm button.

Instead of using that, ensure you are personalizing that confirmation email.

In about a line or, so tell your subscribers why they need to confirm the email and how it helps them avoid spam. This will help more people to take action on the email and confirm their emails.

Writing a Good welcome email

A welcome email is the first email that is sent to your subscriber after the confirmation email. It will usually have a link to download the FREEBIE that you had promised your subscriber.

Spend a few minutes crafting a good and engaging email.

Use this welcome email to set some expectations with your subscribers like –

  1. the kind of emails they can expect from you – promotional, informative etc.
  2. the frequency of emails that you will be sending
  3. any specific email address that you want them to whitelist and which you will be using to send the emails etc.

You can also do a subtle promotion of any of your biggest and most recommend products or, service in this first email.

This is because the welcome email is the one that will get the most open rates.

Use a Good subject line

If your subscriber will open your email or, not will depend upon your subject line because that is the only thing they will see first in their inbox.

So you want your subject line to be a good and effective one that can make the reader open the email to read it.

Learn the best practices from some of the experts and write a subject line that has a good hook!

There are a lot of simple hacks and tricks that gets emails opened.

You can try them!

Promoting your optin form

When you are promoting or, even designing your optin form, ensure you are giving your subscriber a reason to subscribe.

A generic, “join my email list” or, “sign up to my newsletter” is not a good enough reason for somebody to sign up.

Where as something like, “Join to learn how to get 1000 subscribers in the next 30 days” is a compelling reason for somebody to join.

Test everything

Once you have setup your optin form and queued your welcome email, test everything out to see if everything is working fine.

The last thing that you want is a subscriber coming and entering their email address and it not getting captured.

I have also had instances where the email address is captured but the Welcome email doesn’t go because of a glitch in the way I had scheduled it.

Or, in some cases the welcome email goes but the download link doesn’t work.

This breaks the trust.

So you don’t want these to happen. And remember that the first impression is the best impression.

Create Your Sequence in advance

A sequence is a series of emails that go out automatically to your subscribers once they sign up to your list.

Different autoresponders call it by different names – campaigns, sequences, autoresponders etc.

Sequences saves a lot of time and keeps your list active.

So use them and ensure that you are writing and scheduling all of the emails in your sequence in advance.

You don’t want to be writing them as subscribers start joining your email list.

Decide on the frequency

You might want to decide on a comfortable frequency that you can follow to send the emails to your subscribers.

Remember that the more regular you are with your emails, the more warmed up and active your list will be.

So don’t let your list die by not sending out regular emails.

Now something that you might want to keep in mind is that writing these emails is like writing blogposts. It takes time and effort. So you might want to schedule out the time to write and schedule these emails.

If you plan well, you will be able to do it as part of your content creation process and avoid any last minute rush.

Ask subscribers to respond or, reply

Most email service providers like Gmail, Hotmail etc. uses a simple technique to mark an email as a “marketing email” or, “SPAM”.

It is by checking if the subscriber is interacting with the email or, not.

This could be like moving the email from one folder to another or, responding to the emails.

So in all of your emails, ask questions or, create a situation that might need the subscriber to reply or, respond to your email.

This helps move your emails from the SPAM folder to the inbox

Test your email quality

There are tools that are available to check the quality of your emails like:

  1. how effective is the subject line
  2. what is your email’s SPAM test rating
  3. how your email looks on different devices etc.

If these tools are available with your autoresponder, then do test your emails.

It helps in better deliverability and better open rates.

Conclusion – Email Marketing Tips for Podcasters

There are a lot of other advanced tips and tricks that can help you get more out of your email marketing efforts like A/B testing, Copywriting frameworks etc.

But I will keep all of those for a later episode

For now, these simple and basic email marketing tips will get you much better ROI that most others who don’t know or, understand these.

These might look a little overwhelming but when you implement it, you will find that it doesn’t need a lot of effort and can be done pretty easily.

So use them!

I hope you found value in this episode and enjoyed it.
