This is the fifth episode in our series on Email Marketing Strategies!

Over the last few weeks we have discussed a lot of things around email marketing like best practices, most common mistakes, tips and tricks etc.

So if you haven’t listened to those then do check them out first.

Now in this episode we are going to be looking at one of the core purposes of us building an email list, especially as podcasters – Listener engagement.

..and how to boost it by following some very simple tips!

Email Marketing Strategies to Boost Listener Engagement

Inboxes are becoming more and more noisier these days.

Every email is fighting to get the attention of the reader and statistics show that almost 90% of emails lose this battle and end up in the “Trash” folder.

If you want your subscriber or, your listener to engage with your podcast, then that is the last thing that you need.

You want your subscribers to open your emails and read them.

The email marketing strategies that I am going to discuss today will help you ensure that.

So let us get started;

Personalization Tactics

Did you know that emails with the recipient’s first name in the subject line have higher click-through rates than those without?

The basic form of personalization is using the subscriber’s names in the email subject lines and email body.

But personalization isn’t just about using names; it’s about tailoring the content to meet the interests and the behaviors of your audience.

You might want to send content based on the episodes they’ve listened to or, maybe the topics that they’ve shown interest in.

This approach makes each listener feel special and more connected to your podcast.

Personalization is one of the best email marketing strategies to boost listener engagement and something that you should absolutely be using in your email marketing.

Segmenting Your Email List

Segmenting your email list means organizing your subscribers into different groups based on certain criteria.

Why do this?

Because it allows you to send more targeted and relevant content.

Imagine if you subscribed to an email list which promised you email marketing tips. But then you start getting emails about how to sell products on Amazon?

You won’t like that and you won’t even be opening that email from the second time onwards.

For example, in the case of podcasting, you might have segments for those who love technical topics versus those who prefer your interviews.

This targeted approach not only increases engagement but also reduces the chance of subscribers tuning out because they only receive content that interests them.

Writing Engaging Email Content

Engaging email content is more than just updates about your next episode.

It includes value-added materials like exclusive insights, sneak peeks, or special guest previews.

Remember that email marketing is all about building a relationship. The better the relationship with your audience the better will be the open rates.

And for a good relationship, you need to be sending good emails that has a lot of value and are engaging enough.

So your goal should be to make each email so compelling that your subscribers are excited to open them.

Remember, the quality of your content reflects the quality of your podcast.

Using Automated Email Campaigns

Remember that the better systems you can build, the more time you will be able to free up for the other things.

And one of the critical components in a good marketing system is automated email campaigns.

Automated email campaigns can save you a lot of time and ensure your subscribers hear from you regularly.

Set up a welcome email series for new subscribers or an anniversary email celebrating their one year of listening or, even a series on a particular topic like this one I am doing – “email marketing for podcasters”.

These automations can be called by different names by different autoresponders – like sequences by Convertkit, Campaigns by Aweber etc.

Automation makes your listeners feel continually connected to your show without you having to manage every communication manually.

Interactive Emails

The objective of your emails should be to make your listeners interact with it, to engage with them and to respond to you and your questions.

So how about making your emails interactive?

But then how would you do it?

You can run polls, surveys or, even ask questions which your audience can respond to.

A simple poll on what topics they’d like more coverage on, or a contest where they can guess a snippet from your next episode also works really well.

Interactivity increases engagement rates and makes your emails something to look forward to.

And the best part is that the more interactive your audience is, to your emails, the better your sending reputation becomes.

Testing and Optimizing Email Campaigns

This is one of the most underused feature in email marketing.

Remember, you can’t improve what you don’t measure.

And the best way to measure the impact, especially when it comes to optimizing email campaigns is A/B testing.

A/B testing allows you to send two versions of your email to see which performs better.

You can test different subject lines, email designs, or call to actions to find what resonates best with your audience.

You can then use these insights to refine your approach and boost your overall engagement.

One simple A/B testing that I did with one of my emails, got me an increase of almost 140% in the open rates.

So test and optimize your email campaigns.

If your service provider doesn’t have the A/B testing feature, then they are primitive. I would recommend that you move over to another provider who gives you better features.

I use and recommend BirdSend because it is the best when it comes to deliverability, features and pricing. They are the most affordable email autoresponders out there.

Encouraging Direct Responses

Lastly, encourage your listeners to respond to your emails.

This can be a simple question at the end of your email, like asking their opinion on a recent episode, or what topics they want covered.

Responses not only improve your email’s standing in spam filters but also give you direct feedback to help tailor your show.

Do you know that when a subscriber responds to one of your emails, Gmail moves all your future emails into their inbox instead of sending them to their Promotions tab?

That’s right!

That is the power of direct responses.

So make your subscribers respond to your emails.

Conclusion – Email Marketing Tips

Remember, the best approach is one that reflects the interests and needs of your audience. Experiment with these email marketing strategies, and always keep your listener in mind.
